Benoit Averly Wood Sculptor
Benoît Averly lives and works in Burgundy, France. There, he creates, in a refined spirit, art pieces in wood; with subtle contrasts, playing with light, lines and textures. Inspired by nature and architecture, he feeds his creations through his photographic journey through numerous trips, in search of a rhythm, and quiet balance.
Wood, a medium he discovered in his childhood, is worked in simple shapes, rarely smooth, most often hewn with different effects of matter, texture, or repetitive patterns. On some pieces the wood loses its obvious aspect, taking on the properties of other elements.
The work is instinctive, and often takes place all at once, after a long reflection akin to how a calligrapher works. His most coveted creations, prized by interior designers, architects and collectors internationally, most reflect a peaceful grace, and are centerpieces in luxury residential and hospitality projects.
“Benoît Averly's work is an evocation of patterns and shapes that are found in nature, known by everyone but not representing something in particular which invites the viewer to express their own interpretation of the artworks as it leaves space for imagination." An example of this is Benoit’s representation of the shell form. The shell has been used in ornamentation and design before civilization began and has carried through ancient cultures, Rococo, Art Deco, and now with Benoit’s interpretation.
His work has touchstones from varied locales and cultures. From the line and finishing of fine Japanese and Scandinavian craftsmanship to the warmth, monumentality, and spirit of African and Oceania carvings.
